Some good news
| Some good news |
| You won't read this in the papers, but here's a quiet item of good news. In the photo below, a new railroad track almost reaches Holly Street in downtown Monterey, Tennessee. Key word here is "new." After about 18 years of abandonment, the line from Cookeville to Monterey has been reopened and is being prepared for heavy-duty freight trains and passenger excursions. Bulk loads of sand will be the first commodity shipped but having the railroad opens the way for other industries, making the economic outlook for the citizens of that area much brighter than even a year ago. The passenger trains will bring tourists, and bring out local artisans, musicians and cooks to met the trains and offer their products. Look for a festival atmosphere in what is now a muddy half completed train yard across the street from the 1909 Vintage Imperial Hotel, now a museum. There is a plan afoot to build a depot as a new centerpiece to the downtown area. I'd like to be on that first train. Actually. I'd like to be driving it. |
